Problem-Based Learning and the Real World Navy Challenge (Part 1 of 3)
About this presenter - Debbie Lugar

S.T.E.M. education and problem-based teaching and learning are currently at the forefront of today's discussions relating to increasing the quality and rigor of education in our classrooms. A series of 3 webinars has been developed to equip science, math, and technology teachers to integrate PBL in their classrooms using materials and resources developed through our Real World Navy Challenge. This initial webinar introduces participants to the Scarboro South virtual nuclear power plant developed by Chester County Intermediate Unit 24 to support a previous Real World Navy Challenge project. Students learn about the generation of nuclear energy by visiting an exact replica of a boiling water nuclear power plant in our virtual learning environment, NewWorlds. The teacher then develops a problem-based scenario that allows students to authentically investigate an issue related to nuclear energy. Problems developed can focus on either science, technology, engineering, or math, grades 6-12.
